An ode to my mother. Woman to woman. Child to her Mother

Today, October 26th, 2025
my mother would have turned one hundred and five.

It has been almost twenty-nine years since she passed, 
and yet… she has never truly left. 
She lives within me. In the scent of curry and spices, 
in the memory of her hands grating corn for the porridge of our childhood. 
In the silence between my words, 
in the woman I am today. 

This ode is my gratitude. 
My recognition. 
A tribute to the woman who gave me life, 
and who, often without knowing, taught me what love truly means. 

I also want to share a Hindu song with you. My mother was Hindu by birth, but due to circumstances, had to go to a Roman Catholic boarding school, where she wasn't allowed to practice Hinduism anymore. I always felt as if she couldn't come home to her True Essence. So, today I want to honor her in her Human Heritage as a woman starting in her Hindu background. The title is Meri Maa, My Mother.

This song celebrates the unconditional love and care of a mother.
The lyrics describe how a mother is always present, protecting and comforting her child, even without words.
It highlights her selflessness and the deep emotional connection mothers share with their children.

Maybe my ode will remind you of your own connection with your mother, despite all that happened, as in my case. To live from a place of unconditional and eternal love.

Ode aan mijn moeder, van vrouw tot vrouw. Meri Maa, Mijn Moeder

Vandaag, 26 oktober, zou mijn moeder honderdvijf jaar oud zijn geworden. Het is bijna negenentwintig jaar sinds ze is heengegaan, en toch... is ze nooit echt weg geweest. Ze leeft in mij. In de geur van kerrie en kruiden, in de herinnering aan haar handen die mais raspten voor de pap van onze jeugd. In de stilte tussen mijn woorden, in de vrouw die ik vandaag ben. Meri Ma, Mijn Moeder. 

Ik buig voor jou. 

In deze podcast hoor je een deel van een Hindoestaans lied dat gaat over de liefde en de zorg van een moeder voor haar kinderen.

Mijn moeder startte haar leven op aarde als een Hindoemeisje, maar mocht vanaf haar puberteit haar geloof niet meer uitoefenen omdat ze, door familieomstandigheden, in een katholiek internaat terecht kwam. Ze werd gedoopt en moest afstand doen van haar Hindugeloof. Ik voelde alsof ze hierdoor, niet tot haar kern kon komen. En gene vrede kon sluiten met haar oorsprong. Daarom kies ik vandaag een prachtig Hindoelied voor haar.
